Successful law students

The “Vienna Moot Court” is the world’s biggest and most renowned competition for law students in civil and commercial law. Once again, a team of students has achieved a brilliant result.

The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot is a competition for law students to foster the study and practice of international commercial sales law and arbitration. Students from all countries are eligible. The Moot involves a dispute arising out of a contract of sale between two countries that are party to the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods.

In 2022, the case revolved around two international companies that negotiated the purchase of environmentally-friendly palm oil. The parties were already in agreement on many points, but a few questions remained unanswered. A few months before the first delivery, a greenwashing scandal involving one of the parties was then made public. The other party immediately declared the negotiations to be over, even though the other party assumed that the contract had already been concluded.

The Moot Court offers students unique experiences: professional and personal contacts, travel and ups and downs in a team. The teams of the University of Bern are regularly among the best teams on the international stage.
